Entries open for 2022 Encounters Documentary Festival

Encounters is returning to celebrate the best of independent filmmaking for the 24th-anniversary edition with a multi-platform event from 23 June to 3 July 2022.

The Festival discovers and showcases the best documentaries from talented filmmakers spanning South Africa, the broader African region, and the rest of the world. The line-up of award winners and nominees, hidden gems and the most talked-about documentaries of the year will engage, entertain, and inspire South African audiences.

The Festival programmers are looking for films that tackle current issues from unique perspectives, take audiences on a journey of discovery and innovate the genre form.

Encounters honours films that embody universal themes, and welcome films across a wide spectrum of categories; human rights, current affairs, arts and culture, biographies, science, health, personal and many more.

Encounters offer filmmakers various jury and audience awards, extensive media coverage and the opportunity to participate in our Encounters Talks Programme.

South African and African film submissions are exempt from paying a submission fee.

The deadline for submissions is 11 March 2022.
