AFDA is inviting applications for the position of Social Media Officer:

We are seeking a dynamic and creative Social Media Officer to manage and grow AFDA’s online presence across all digital platforms. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating engaging content, scheduling posts, monitoring online conversations, and supporting broader marketing initiatives.

This role requires a strong understanding of social media trends, excellent communication skills, and the ability to translate brand objectives into impactful digital storytelling.

The Social Media Officer will work closely with the marketing team to enhance audience engagement, strengthen brand visibility, and support student recruitment efforts.

Role and responsibilities:

1. Content and creative execution
  • Implement content calendars, coordinating with design and production teams to ensure timely delivery.
  • Ensure content is optimised for engagement, readability, and platform-specific performance.
  • Implement the rollout of digital assets across multiple channels.
2. Social media management
  • Execute platform-specific content strategies to drive growth, engagement, and brand consistency.
  • Implement community management protocols and monitor and respond to comments, messages, and mentions to foster positive audience interactions.
  • Manage paid social advertising, optimising targeting and budget allocation for maximum ROI.
3. Trend analysis and content optimisation
  • Monitor industry trends, platform updates, and audience behaviour to keep content relevant and competitive.
  • Test and optimise post formats, timings, and messaging based on data insights.
  • Implement A/B testing for organic and paid content.
4. Collaboration and stakeholder engagement
  • Work closely with marketing, PR, design, and digital marketing departments to align social media with overall Institution goals.
  • In-house and outsourced production pipeline management across video, graphic design, print, and merchandise
  • Develop and implement targeted social media campaigns to engage alumni and influencer collaborations to optimise future initiatives.
5. Monitoring and reporting
  • Track social media KPIs such as reach, engagement, conversions, and follower growth.
  • Use analytics tools (e.g., Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics, Google Analytics) to measure campaign performance.
  • Prepare regular reports with insights and actionable recommendations to inform future strategies.


Requirements

Requirements and skills
  • Proven experience as a social media officer, content creator, or similar role.
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms, best practices, and emerging trends.
  • Excellent writing, proofreading, and storytelling skills.
  • Ability to create engaging content (text, image, video) tailored to different platforms.
  • Proficiency with social media management and scheduling tools (e.g. Meta Business Suite, Hootsuite, Later).
  • Basic design and video skills and familiarity with tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong organisational and time-management abilities, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret social media insights and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and communicate effectively.
  • Creativity, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Selection criteria:
Qualifications
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in marketing, communications, digital media, public relations, or a related field.
  • Additional certifications in social media management, digital marketing, content creation, or analytics (e.g. Meta Blueprint, Google Analytics, SEO/SEM courses) are advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience managing social media platforms and producing digital content.
  • Strong understanding of digital communication principles and audience engagement strategies.
  • 3 to 5 Year’s working experience
  • AFDA employs candidates in line with the Employment Equity Act and as such
  • Preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates from designated groups.
