Algoa FM considered one of best radio stations in SA

Algoa FM has been nominated as the commercial "Station of the Year" for the first time in the annual MTN Radio Awards.

"The Station of the Year Award is extremely prestigious and gives the station bragging rights and the pride in knowing that it has been judged the best by a leading, independent team of adjudicators," says Lance Rothschild, CEO of the MTN Radio Awards.

Commercial stations against which Algoa FM is competing are 702, Jacaranda FM, Kaya FM and Power 98.7.

"We are absolutely blown away by this announcement and I'm almost speechless," says Algoa FM Operations Director, Alfie Jay.

Presenters and shows on the station is also in the running for several other MTN Radio awards.

Wayne Hart, who received the 2013 MTN Radio award for the Best Music show in South Africa, was again nominated in 2014 for the Algoa FM Top 30 with Wayne Hart, which is broadcast on Saturdays from nine to 12 in the morning.

The 2013 winner in the Best Breakfast Show Presenter category Daron Mann has again been nominated in the category.

For the first time Algoa FM's online and creative teams have been nominated in three categories for the Algoa FM Heritage Day Virtual Flag competition - Multi Channel Promotion; Programming Innovation; and Promotion/Stunt/Event.

"To make it into the Top 5 out of 260-odd radio stations in this country, and knowing we're in the running for this award is an accolade in itself. Every single one of our staff, listeners and advertisers can pride themselves on an amazing achievement," says Jay.

According to Rothschild the radio stations are judged on the quality and depth of programmes, on-air success and innovation, audience numbers and trends, community outreach, understanding of listener and focus on the listener's needs, and the 'X-factor'.

"This year, several of Algoa's entries were exceptional (as can be seen by the number of finalists Algoa has amassed) and stood out as being amongst the best in the industry.

"In addition, the station performed well when measured up against all the criteria - sufficiently for the station to be considered to be one of the best in SA.

"It is now up to the panel to determine which station will be the MTN Radio Awards Commercial Station of the Year," he says.

The winners will be announced at an awards banquet hosted at the Sandton Convention Centre on Saturday the 18th of April.
