Contributing 67 minutes to Good Hope Community Organisation

"A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of." - Nelson Mandela

Smiles were aplenty when Enterprises University of Pretoria (Enterprises UP) did their part for Mandela Day 2019 at the Good Hope Community Organisation in Mabopane on Thursday, 18 July.

Founded by Mama Mary Lwate in 1978, the orphanage has been home to over 130 impoverished and homeless children over the years. The orphans taken in consist of children aged between two and 18 years old. Also catered for are some destitute members of the community who come in daily for a meal as part of the organisation’s poverty alleviation programme, making this facility a friend and home to many local people.

This year, representatives from Enterprises UP spent their 67 minutes at Good Hope Community Organisation, delivering some much-needed supplies including toiletry, blankets and non-perishable supplies. The generous Enterprises UP employees collectively donated supplies to the shelter that currently houses 47 children, manned by a staff of 10.

The annual Mandela Day celebrations help us to remember the legacy of Nelson Mandela and encourage us all to continue to do the good work that he started. After 41 years, Mama Mary continues to do her part by providing a very important service to her community. The home receives its children through the court and social workers who work with the Department of Social Development. While the home is maintained by a state subsidy, the donations received through the public go a long way in ensuring better service delivery for the residents.

The event was a great success and a special thank you is extended to everyone who gave of their time and opened up their wallets to make this special day memorable for the children.
