Aria launches ‘Power of Local’ campaign to revive SA’s rail industryThe African Rail Industry Association (Aria) has launched “The Power of Local Begins Here,” a national localisation campaign to rebuild South Africa’s rail sector, boost domestic manufacturing, and restore confidence in the country’s industrial capabilities. ![]() Source: jplenio1 via Freepik The campaign highlights that a strong rail system is central to national growth and calls for collaboration between government, industry, labour, and communities, sending a clear message: when South Africa builds locally, Africa moves globally. After years of declining rail performance, skills erosion, and reliance on imported equipment, Aria frames localisation as a strategic tool for economic recovery rather than a narrow industrial policy. By focusing on local manufacturing—from components to complete rail systems—the campaign aims to strengthen economic resilience, expand competitive advantage, develop technical skills, and restore South Africa’s industrial sovereignty. ![]() Mesela Nhlapo, Chief Executive Officer, Aria Aria chief executive officer Mesela Nhlapo said rail is South Africa’s economic backbone. "We find ourselves in a time of great opportunity," she said. She added: "With proper implementation of reforms, the rail sector can be restored to the central economic engine upon which many industries depend." Rebuilding rail and local manufacturingThe campaign positions every locally produced locomotive or wagon as more than just infrastructure—it represents livelihoods, technical skills, and opportunities for artisans, engineers, technicians, and small businesses across the rail value chain. Rebuilding locally also addresses logistics bottlenecks, reconnects communities, and shifts the sector from dependency on imports to sustainable development. A call to stakeholdersAria is urging government, industry, labour, and communities to invest in South African capability and support the country’s emergence as Africa’s rail manufacturing leader. “The Power of Local Begins Here” is a call to action for all stakeholders to contribute to a rail revival that drives economic growth, strengthens skills, and keeps value within the country. |
