New top-of-range SA wine wins international trophy

A South African wine has been judged the top Shiraz in the 2007 International Wine & Spirit Competition, the organisers announced in London on Thursday (October 4).

The 2005 Nederburg Manor House Shiraz took the Rosemount Estate Trophy, earning the best of class rating to come out ahead of renowned producers, including those from Australia, the source of most New World international winners made from this grape.

The estate's 2003 Edelkeur, the noble late harvest wine sold exclusively on the Nederburg Auction, was also judged best in its class to bring home a gold.

The Shiraz, which forms part of the estate's recently launched best-of-best collection of varietal wines, also won at gold medal at the inaugural Syrah du Monde, held recently in Ampuis in the northern Rhône Valley of France. Meanwhile, the latest vintage, the current release 2006, won a gold on the local Michelangelo International Wine Awards.

The 2006 vintage of the limited edition Manor House Shiraz is available from selected stockists nationally and sells for around R84 a bottle.
