Pinotage puts SA estate in tie for top position

Spier Private Collection Pinotage 2004 won the trophy and a gold medal (best in class) while the remaining two gold medals (best in class) were won by its Private Collection Shiraz 2005 and Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2004. The estate's wins represent 30% of South Africa's total gold and trophy tally; which comprised four trophies and 23 golds from 581 entries. Some 4,800 entries were submitted from around the globe this year.

Says Cellar Master Frans Smit, "It's great to be awarded for a wine that we strive to keep so true to terroir. Pinotage is a very vineyard-driven wine - much more than people may think."

Spier's recent additional successes include two gold medals at Mundus Vini in Germany, a triple gold medal win for the third year running at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles and four gold medals at the SA Young Wine Show.
