With the help of consumers, Baby Soft® will aid in the raising and training of real puppies, putting them on a path to becoming guide dogs for visually impaired South Africans.
Guide dog puppy tokens are hidden inside the brand's newly packaged white premium 2-ply 4's, 9's and 18's bath tissue packs. When you buy a pack and find a token inside, sending an sms of the token's unique code to the given number will earn you a guide dog puppy soft toy. For every puppy that is sent out, Baby Soft® will donate R10 to SAGA, helping to train future guide dogs and give vital support to visually impaired individuals.
SAGA's PRO, Pieter van Niekerk, who himself is visually impaired, has a special connection with the program, “My guide dog, Thornton, is almost entirely responsible for my quality of life. He gives me everything from independence to companionship”, he says.
He says that training guide dogs is a costly and time-consuming job and the staff that dedicate themselves to the program rely heavily on the support of companies such as Kimberly-Clark to support the initiative. “It currently costs approximately R10000 and takes 18 months to train a single guide dog. All puppies are bred from specially selected parents and are placed in private homes at six or seven weeks old to begin their puppy development program,” he says.
