'Ban alcohol adverts' - ANCYL

The ANCYL has launched a campaign to ban alcohol advertisements in all media channels.

The league said it would also take its fight to advertising agencies and the SA Breweries.

Spokesperson Floyd Shivambu on Tuesday, 3 November 2009, said that all leaders of the league would “lead by example in their use of alcohol”.

He said the league would form partnerships with government departments to intensify the campaign.

“The ANCYL has resolved to run a mass campaign calling for stronger legislative regulation of alcohol trade and distribution, and calling for a ban on all alcohol advertisements in all media channels,” Shivambu said.

He argued that alcohol destroyed communities and the league wanted to discourage the “irresponsible consumption of alcohol by all people in society, particularly the youth”.

Shivambu reiterated former youth league president Fikile Mbalula's call that the sale of alcohol on Sundays should be banned and that outlets should stop trading at 2am.

“We cannot continue to celebrate alcohol while it is responsible for many social ills, including the rapid spread of HIV, crime and social decay,” Shivambu said.
