10 SABS standards for disability products, services

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) has developed a series of standards that aim to enable all persons with disabilities to participate fully in all aspects of life - social, economic, political, academic, leisure and any other activity enjoyed by able-bodied people.

"It is an important goal for society that all people have access to products, services, workplaces and environments. The issue of accessibility to and usability of products and services has become more critical with the increasing percentage of older persons in the world's population. While not all older persons have disabilities, the prevalence of disability or limitations is highest among this demographic group," says Sadhvir Bissoon, standards executive at the SABS.

The SABS also have testing facilities that offer test services of metal crutches for adults with focus on types of crutches, construction and finish.
