Cornubia is a mixed use and mixed income development, proposed to provide some 28 000 homes, according to the Department of Housing.

The completed project will include mixed income housing units, light industrial factories, retail parks, schools, various businesses and open parks.

The development - expected to span over 20 years and alter the skyline of Umhlanga in the future - is located 15km south of the King Shaka International Airport between Phoenix, Ottawa and Waterloo and newer areas of Mt Edgecombe and Umhlanga.

It has been planned to integrate these very different and disparate communities in a manner which adds value and enhances linkages and opportunities to all.

The Cornubia project is a joint venture between the national Department of Human Settlements, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Human Settlements, eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality and Tongaat Hullet Development.

President Zuma will officially launch the project on Sunday, 6 April 2014, accompanied by the Minister of Human Settlements Connie September, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu and eThekwini Executive Mayor Councillor James Nxumalo.
