Mardi Gras magic

Sandton resident, Dean Solomons, and three of his friends departed this week to New Orleans, to join thousands of revellers for what is undoubtedly the world's most flamboyant street party, Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras (meaning Fat Tuesday) sees thousands of people from all over the world gather on Bourbon Street in celebration.

“My friends and I are looking forward to taking in the sights and sounds of New Orleans, experiencing the raucous carnival atmosphere and tastes of the famous Cajun and Creole foods,” says Dean Solomons, the lucky winner of the Southern Comfort Mardi Gras competition.

Southern Comfort hosted a series of parties across the country in 2008 offering locals the opportunity to win an all expenses paid trip to attend Mardi Gras in New Orleans, USA. Announced as the winner by 5FM's DJ Fresh, Dean and friends will experience the world's biggest street party in New Orleans - home of Southern Comfort, a whisky liqueur created by a barman in 1874.

October 2009 brings Mardi Gras to South African shores once again and this year's event promise to be bigger and better than ever before, adding a local twist to an international phenomenon. As they say in New Orleans, “Let the Good Times Roll”.
