The festival has been running for 15 years and is an annual fundraiser and awareness-raising event of The Cape Mental Health Society, a 100-year-old registered non-profit organisation that offers free community-based services and support to children and adults with mental disabilities, as well as those who suffer from emotional trauma and breakdown. The organisation is specifically focused on communities from vulnerable and impoverished areas, and the event is one way of sending out a strong message that children and adults with mental disabilities should be seen, heard and included in society.

There are up to 25 000 visitors over the two-day event, which attracts R1.5 million worth of media coverage on TV, radio, print and cyber. There are show kites and kiters from around the world as well as lots of competitions, prizes and give-aways.The event is open from 10am to 6pm each day and entry is R10 per adult and R5 per child.
