Bumper grape crop for winemakers

South Africa's grape harvest is likely to yield almost 1,4m tons of alcohol, the third largest on record and up 8% from last year according to the SA Wine Industry Information and Systems (Sawis).

Sawis compiles its statistics from information received from producer cellars and viticulture consultants‚ who estimate the overall crop size.

The 2013 wine crop - including juice and concentrate for non-alcoholic purposes‚ wine for brandy and distilling wine - should amount to 1.070m litres‚ calculated at an average recovery of 773 litres per ton of grapes.

The grape harvesting season extends from January to April with the last month mainly consisting of crushing. Sawis spokesperson Yvette van der Merwe said the Western Cape had experienced one of its colder winters this year and also had sufficient rain to alleviate the drought Stellenbosch‚ Paarl and Malmesbury.

Van der Merwe said wine producers had adapted and improved viticulture practices to increase yields per hectare.

She said weather conditions were favourable during the flowering period‚ although some unevenness in the quality may have been caused by cold and wet conditions in parts of the province.

"At this stage grape vines appear to be maturing about seven to 12 days later than usual‚" Van der Merwe said.

Van der Merwe said the information Sawis had received showed the strikes by agricultural workers had not influenced the harvest yield at all.
