It's just a jump to the left...

Saturday night saw a drive to the Barnyard Theatre in Durbanville to catch the zany, fun, erotic and over the top production of the all time classic Rocky Horror Picture Show by Richard O'Brien. The original Rocky Horror Picture Show musical parody film released in 1975 has quite the cult following, many of who could be seen at the Barnyard Theatre on Saturday night. Most attendees were dressed up in their favourite skanky-cross dressing gear and gave new meaning to the term “dressing up for the theatre“.
It's just a jump to the left...

Guests were treated to a preview before the main action took centre stage in the form of back up dancers and singers in character walking around the audience space. One very cool and pretty gentleman just stared broodingly while another more animated one crawled on tables stole food and pointed out he was wearing a Zac Efron badge to us.

As it has been a while since I had seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show I had forgotten how good the music and lyrics were but as soon as the curtain was raised all those great tunes came flooding back to me. You know great lines like “In just seven days, I can make you a man”, “Science fiction (ooh ooh ooh) double feature, Doctor X (ooh ooh ooh) will build a creature. “And who can forget “You bring your knees in tight, but it's the pelvic thrust, they really drive you insane, let's do the Time Warp again.” And two and a half days later I still have the Time Warp song stuck in my head.

The costumes and makeup of the production was top class and really captured the overall mood of the movie. Cast members worth a mention are Columbia the Southern hyper active right hand woman of Dr Frank N Furter, Rocky and his twitching muscles and the lecherous and incestuous hunch backed Riff Raff.

But by far the best performance was by lead Llewellyn Cordier as the transvestite alien Dr Frank N Furter though his acting and singing skills paled somewhat in comparison to the amazing skill he displayed in dancing and jumping around in corset and death defying 6 inch stilettos. At one stage even running up a revolving, yes revolving I tell you narrow spiral stare case and doing a clever little hop and skip at the top.

Do yourself a favour and don't dream it but do it and take quick a jump to the left and step to the right to catch yourself some sexy transsexual and transvestite action with the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Barnyard Theatre which runs till the 19 June.
