Patti LaBelle at Grand West

From humble beginnings in a choir in Philadelphia, Patricia Louise Holte grew up to become one of the most talented soul and R&B songstresses of all time. Armed with a high-octave voice and gravity-defying hairstyle, she joined forces with Nona Hendryx, Sarah Dash and Cindy Birdsong, and the legendary quartet Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles was born.

Now Capetonians can witness the magic of the award-winning legend when Patti LaBelle performs live at GrandWest's Grand Arena on Friday, 30 October.

Forty-year musical career

The show will include hits spanning a musical career which has endured for over 40 years. Early hits such as the gospel-styled doo-wop rendition of Down the Aisle, the Liverpool anthem You'll Never Walk Alone, Dani Boy and Lady Marmalade give way to classic ballads such as On My Own with Michael McDonald, If Only You Knew, You Are My Friend, and If You Asked Me.

Patti recently reunited with Dash and Hendryx for the first time in 30 years to produce a LaBelle album “Back to Now”. She is also scheduled to work on a solo project soon.

Patti has received nine Grammy nominations and two Grammy awards, an Emmy nomination and one nomination and one American Music Award. In 2003 she received the Songwriters Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award.

New pop divas pay homage

New pop divas Christina Aguilera, Missy Elliot, Pink, Mya and Lil' Kim paid homage to LaBelle with a hip-hop rendition of her 1973 hit, Lady Marmalade. The song appeared on the soundtrack of the Academy Award-winning film Moulin Rouge.

In June 2009, LaBelle was honoured at New York's Harlem Apollo Theatre after she was inducted to the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame by admirers such as Mariah Carey and Prince.

The show start at 8pm and tickets are available through Computicket at 083 915 8000 or www.computicket.com Tickets cost between R250 and R395.
