Newtown is a dynamic collective of musicians from diverse backgrounds who brew their own particular brand of uplifting multi-genre music, distilled from their experiences of life in SA's biggest city, Johannesburg. The six-piece band's sound is hard to classify, comprising elements of funk, Afro-soul, rock, pop and blues, with a nod to hip-hop and dub. Needless to say, with such a wide range of influences and styles, Newtown's music defies categorisation and is an original expression of each member's love for what they do.
Pebbles, who lends her considerable vocal talents and dynamic stage presence to Newtown, is also a solo artist in her own right, known for collaborations with artists like Tumi and The Volume, Zubz, and RJ Benjamin. Amy Difford (bass) and Doug Rodger (drums) make up Newtown's rhythm section, while LeRoy Croft supplies sonic manipulation, effects and synths. Ryan Norwood Young is the band's lead guitarist, and Duane Arthur (alto sax and rhythm guitar) completes the line-up.
Newtown's debut album, “The Bridge”, was entirely self-produced, with SAMA-winning engineer and producer LeRoy Croft and Ryan Norwood-Young doing the honours. 'The Bridge” is slated for nationwide release through Soul Candi Records this year. Newtown will be touring within Gauteng and further afield in SA, including their first appearance at Splashy Fen in April, 2010.
