SABC staff disenchanted, dissatisfied

The South African Broadcasting Corporation is plagued by poor morale and sub-standard working conditions and is being run by senior staff who are acting as heads of departments but have no power to implement decisions.

According to an article published in Business Day, these facts emerged during the Parliamentary communications portfolio committee's visit to the broadcaster.

Democratic Alliance shadow minister for communications, Natasha Michael says that staff were deeply unhappy and demotivated, worked in offices in a sad state of disrepair and in some cases there were not even working toilets nearby.
Moreover, staff were constantly being threatened with retrenchment.

SABC staff openly complained to MPs in the Western Cape and Michael said that other reports from regions around the country were also alarming as staff say they have been disempowered because all decisions have to be made at the corporation's head office in Auckland Park.
