Sales outside Europe rose by 9.1 percent.
The performance of cars sold with the specific Renault label fell by 6.0 percent to 2.1 million units.
Sales by the low-cost subsidiary Dacia rose by 4.8 percent to 359,800.
But for the first time Renault made more than half of its sales outside Europe, and it said it expected to raise sales and its market share this year.
Renault announced this week that it intended to cut 7,500 jobs or about 15 percent of its workforce, in France by 2016.
