Mazda South Africa announced on Monday it had extended its recall of some models, as it scrambled to fix defective airbags that could affect 19,000 cars in South Africa.

The recall follows an investigation in Japan and North America for three different types of Takata-manufactured airbags.

The models implicated included Mazda2, Mazda6 and Mazda RX-8 vehicles produced from 2003, the car manufacturer said.

"The above-mentioned vehicles are being recalled due to possible faulty airbag inflators that may cause the airbag to not deploy correctly, which may lead to injury," Mazda said.

"We urge all owners of Mazda2, Mazda6 and Mazda RX-8 models that could possibly be affected to please contact the Mazda Dealership Network," it said.
