ABB to construct PV power plants for Eskom

Power and automation technology group ABB will build two solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants for Eskom. The PV plants - the first of their kind built in South Africa - would be designed to operate independently to produce electrical power for use by the existing power stations and can be operated and monitored remotely.

Each of the two pilot plants would be located on one hectare greenfield site adjacent to the Lethabo and Kendal coal-fired power stations. The project would be completed in November.

The project will enable ABB to transfer solar technology skills, says ABB South Africa country manager Carlos Pone, "this will complement and further enhance the local capabilities in engineering and project management."
