Train accidents cost TFR R388m says regulator

The direct cost of railway accidents such as fires‚ collisions and derailments as well as security incidents in 2012-13 cost Transnet Freight Rail R388.3m. The costs of accidents for the Passenger Rail Agency of SA‚ was R167.2m.

The details were published in the Railway Safety Regulator's annual report that was tabled in Parliament recently

According to the regulator there were 909 collisions during the movement of rolling stock in 2012-13 .

A total of 1‚911 people were injured and 447 killed in the incidents. This compares with the previous year's figures of 2‚735 accidents and 425 deaths respectively.
