Cosatu wants mass one-day stayaway

The congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) plans to stage a series of marches around the country that will culminate in a one-day mass stayaway on October 5 according to an article published in Business Day.

The newspaper quotes Cosatu's spokesman, Patrick Craven who says that the union's members will down tools in protest over various issues including the use of labour brokers and the purchase by WalMart of Massmart.

Labour analyst Andrew Levy says that calls by Cosatu for mass action are not unusual but warned that workers are tired of losing money when called upon to stay away from work so this year's mass action might not be particularly successful.
