R500,000 donation results in science vision being realised

Twenty schools in Umlazi will be the proud recipients of the latest CAPS compliant Edutrade Physical Science kits. It is envisaged that this will contribute to an improvement in the learner's performance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics at school level so that more learners can pursue careers requiring these subjects at tertiary level, which is essential to the economic growth of our country.

The objective is to improve results

Abdul Razak Moosa, CEO of the Willowton Group said: "The company always remembers its social and religious responsibilities to educate and to help uplift those less fortunate, regardless of race, colour or creed. There has been a huge amount of negative publicity recently regarding the performance of South African learners in mathematics and science. South Africa has been ranked last in this field. We are, however, determined to change this through providing learners the best possible resources with the objective to improve results."

Edutrade, the Educational Division of Lasec SA has for years partnered with the Department of Education to supply schools with quality educational products which fulfil the requirements of the current curriculum. Regular product updates are done to maintain this, currently all Edutrade Kits and Modules are aligned to our latest CAPS curriculum. The CSI Division for Edutrade has an objective to secure partners within the private sector who share the vision to uplift resources in targeted schools as CSI projects ensuring learning platforms are created to promote better results in these fields of study at school level. The Willowton Group is proud to have partnered with Edutrade due to this synergy in our CSI goals.

In addition to the 20 schools in Durban, the Willowton Group has made an initial donation of R160,000 for four schools in the Pietermaritzburg area with science and mathematics kits. Further projects in the science and technology fields are under consideration.

The project will be coordinated and managed by Ahmed Motala of the New Africa Education Foundation, an NPO we have partnered with to roll out the project to schools.
