Pupils get exposed to waste management course

A group of school children were recently given a crash course in waste management by a Port Elizabeth waste management company.

The 25 pupils from The Gem Project - aged between 16 and 20 - attended a lesson by EP Waste Management owners Donavan and Quinten van Zyl.

The presentation was held to make the pupils aware of the effects of recycling and also to become more conscious of the environment and included a short video which illustrates the statistics on recycling from a first world country.

With the help of the Van Zyl brothers, the school has implemented a recycling station at the school which will help them learn more about recycling and how to effectively care for the environment. The school also received paper bins which would be placed in each classroom.

Quinten said: "It also serves as a platform for these children to then go out and teach others about it and be positive role models in their communities."

Newly appointed project manager at The Gem Siphiwo Rhayi said the pupils were excited after attending the presentation.

"This presentation will help our kids a lot in a sense of being able to differentiate between various waste materials and how to adequately dispose of them," Rhayi said.

Justin Kiewits, 17, said the presentation was very informative and he would love to learn more about it so he too could help them one day.
