The Rising Star Award is given to a promising newcomer to South Africa's restaurant scene, someone considered by the judges to have a compelling food philosophy and commitment to sharing his or her knowledge. The judging panel, led by Eat Out editor Abigail Donnelly, will choose the winner.
Eat Out will also create a selection of recipes paired with wines from Nederburg's Heritage Heroes gourmet wines, each named after a character at the winery that has played a starring role in building its reputation. The recipes will be featured weekly over the campaign period in Eat Out's online newsletter.
"We are thrilled to be showcasing a new culinary talent," says Melissa Diedericks, Nederburg's brand manager in South Africa, "and look forward to collaborating with someone who is similarly driven to excel."
This initiative is Nederburg's latest in its bid to join forces with other taste talents. The brand has teamed up with well-known food personality, Pete Goffe-Wood, who is also a judge in the popular MasterChef South Africa food series. Nederburg is the wine sponsor of the weekly food challenge that runs on M-Net every Thursday at 7.30pm until mid-December. The high-profile maestro has created a selection of recipes for the brand and he and cellar-master Razvan Macici can be seen cooking, tasting and pairing in three fun-to-follow videos on sauces and wine-matching: red wine reduction and variations, Béarnaise and Hollandaise sauces and velouté and variations.
Nederburg has also commissioned Thuli Gogela of the growing Mzansi Style Cuisine blog, whose passion for cooking has extended to wine, to create a collection of recipes, all paired with wines from the multi-tiered range.
