Northlink unveils the Boilermaker Centre of Specialisation

Guests were welcomed by Principal and CEO, Mr Xolelo Brian Phike, who reinforced Northlink’s commitment to strengthening artisan development and preparing students for the evolving demands of industry.

The Boilermaker Centre of Specialisation represents a bold step forward in South Africa’s skills ecosystem. Fitted with advanced machinery including a modern laser-cutting machine valued in the millions the facility mirrors real workplace conditions and supports Northlink’s expanding offering of 11 trades, 11 trade test centres and 52 accredited occupational qualifications.

With 30 industry partners hosting more than 200 apprentices, the Centre demonstrates the power of collaboration in linking training directly to employment and creating sustainable pathways for young artisans. During the programme, Minister Manamela reflected on the significance of the launch and the progress being made in the TVET sector. He said:

“The opening of this Boilermaker Centre of Specialisation reflects the strength of our TVET system. Walking through this workshop and engaging with exhibitors reminded me of what becomes possible when public institutions, industry partners and SETAs collaborate with purpose. With the support of merSETA and other industry partners, Northlink has now added its eleventh trade a clear sign that we are moving with speed to link training to labour-market needs and prepare for a stronger academic year in 2026.

We are building an ecosystem where skills are developed, pipelines are strengthened and opportunities reach every corner of our PSET system. Today we made history, and together, we will continue shaping a future where TVET colleges are the institutions of choice.”

Industry partners echoed the Minister’s message, emphasising the need for sustained cooperation to ensure that South Africa’s workforce remains competitive, adaptable and future-focused.

In closing the event, Henri Mafoumba thanked all guests, partners and students for their participation and affirmed Northlink’s commitment to expanding opportunities and strengthening occupational training across the College.
