Fresh fades and new strides: Jozi FM paints a brighter future for local studentsIn a powerful display of community-led upliftment, Jozi FM has once again proven why it remains the heartbeat of Soweto. Through its 2026 Back-to-School campaign, the station transitioned from the airwaves to the streets, ensuring local learners returned to the classroom with both confidence and the essential gear needed for success. Restoring Pride, One Step at a Time On 4 February 2026, the station’s CEO, Dr. Mpho “Njomane” Mhlongo, returned to his roots at Kholwani Primary School in Jabulani. The visit was more than a homecoming; it was a mission of dignity. Jozi FM donated over 70 pairs of school shoes to learners who had been attending classes in worn-out footwear or slippers. ![]() “A child cannot focus on their books when they are worried about the holes in their shoes,” Dr. Mhlongo noted during the handover. This donation is part of the station’s ambitious broader goal to distribute 5,000 pairs of shoes to disadvantaged children across the region. A Fresh Look for a Fresh Start Parallel to the shoe drive, the Jozi FM Back-to-School Haircut Campaign took over local barbershops. Understanding that grooming plays a vital role in a child’s self-esteem, the station partnered with local businesses like Fabuleux Hair Studio & Beauty in Orlando East and Artists at Work in Mapetla to provide free professional haircuts. Over 500 children benefited from the initiative, ensuring they walked through the school gates looking sharp and ready to learn. More Than Just a Radio Station As South Africa’s largest community radio station, Jozi FM’s impact extends far beyond its frequency. By leveraging its massive listenership—the “Jozi FM Family”—the station acts as a social glue, connecting those in need with those who can help. Through these actions, Jozi FM continues to demonstrate that community radio is not just about the music or the news—it is about service, heritage, and the collective growth of the people it represents.
