Golden Acre gets more space with Grand Parade merger

Golden Acre was ostensibly the first shopping centre to be built in the middle of a South African city, having opened on its prime Adderley Street site in 1979. Now this busy centre - an integral link between the CBD and the city's transport system - has been expanded, just in time for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The Grand Parade Shopping Centre has become part of Golden Acre, adding many new stores and fast-food restaurants.

These include Hungry Lion, Jive City, Cell C, McDonald's, Sportscene, Biltong Bistro, Giddy's Electric Express, Russells, Joshua Doore, OK Furnishers, Mr Price Weekend Material, Your Lunch Box, Mojo's Home Fashion, Shoprite and Top Boutique.

The services of a dentist and ATMs from Nedbank, First National Bank and Standard Bank are also available.

Outlets that will open in the near future include Old Mutual, Maison Frank Beauty and Nando's.

To celebrate the new offering of Golden Acre, there will be entertainment on the Piazza on Friday, 24 April from 11am - 12pm. Shoppers can look forward to performances by The Jonathan Rubain Trio, hip-hop dancers and Loukmaan Adams.

Good Hope FM's DJs Guy McDonald and Priya Reddy will be broadcasting live from the Piazza between 12 - 3pm.

An SMS competition gives Golden Acre shoppers the chance to win a Hisense 32-inch plasma television set worth R6,000, sponsored by Joshua Doore. To enter, simply SMS the word “more” to 34224 (each SMS costs R2). Enter by 19 April 2009.

The winner of the TV will be announced during the Good Hope FM live broadcast, Friday afternoon.

“The merger between Golden Acre and the Grand Parade Shopping Centre just made sense, because the two centres are located directly next to each other,” said John Bielich, one of the developers of this project.

The breakthrough has added 10,461m2 general lettable area to Golden Acre, plus 22,000m2 of office space. This entity is wholly owned by Growthpoint Properties.
