Long lasting South African whites still available

Among the South African white wines coming on the market that are ready for drinking now but could improve with time, the single-vineyard white wines sold under the Lomond label will remain at their best for five to eight years, says winemaker, Kobus Gerber.

"Lomond's 2007 Pincushion Sauvignon Blanc, a single-vineyard wine, is only now, after four years, approaching its optimum, with a wonderful richness of flavours coming to the fore. In 2008, in the Decanter World Wine Awards it was judged the best Sauvignon Blanc from anywhere in the world, selling for less than £10. And let us not forget the Decanter World Wine Awards is one of the most prestigious competitions worldwide attracting close to 10 000 entries every year."

Its 'sister' wine, the 2007 Lomond Sugarbush, also a single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, won the trophy for the best Sauvignon Blanc at the annual Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show in 2009 and then repeated this feat in 2011 at the same show, this time in the museum class.

The 2007 Sugarbush is no longer available, but a few bottles of the 2007 Pincushion are still available at a retail price of about R105 a bottle.
