Analyst forum stresses credit managment in tough times

The first Nedbank Analyst Forum for 2009 kicked off at the SAS Offices in Houghton last week. Speaking at the event were Hanli Roux from the Nedbank Retail Credit lab, Dr. Tjaart van der Walt from the National Debt Mediation Association (NDMA) and Heidi Hancke from KPMG.

Designed to help Nedbank's analysts and statisticians, this forum provided the latest tips and hints and further develop SAS skills to keep up with changing economic climates and new challenges facing financial sector.

This forum focused heavily on managing future challenges that Nedbank may face through credit risk management and followed a central theme of risk analysis and credit scoring-now and in the future.

While Dr. Van Der Walt presented on credit risk management, highlighting the severity of the current state of South African consumer debt, Roux focused on common mistakes made in the statistical analysis of credit decisions. Hancke finished the presentations with her insights on the future of Credit Scorecards and their application to credit policy based on the current "Credit Crunch" lessons.

This was the first of four Nedbank Analyst Forums to be held this year, which are hosted by SAS Institute in conjunction with Nedbank Retail Business Intelligence Solutions for SAS professionals within the financial giant. Such professionals include analysts, statisticians, and programmers and people in the fields of credit risk, marketing analytics, operational risk and financial modelling.

“SAS has been hosting these forums since 2007 with great success, and feel now more than ever it is necessary to keep all our SAS users up to date with SAS tools, helping them utilise their full potential to see them through the economic slowdown,” says Veronica Hodgson, account manager for Nedbank at SAS Institute South Africa.

The next Nedbank Analyst forum will take place in the second quarter of this year.
