Consol gets new chair

Consol Glass (Pty) Limited, the largest premier supplier of glass packaging in southern Africa, has announced the appointment of Oyama Mabandla to its board as non-executive director and chairman.

Mike Arnold, group managing director, says, “We are tremendously excited to have Oyama as chairman of the board, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Consol. With his leadership, we will continue to build and grow our strategic platform and deliver on our business objectives.”

During the late 90's Mabandla was a merchant banker at Union Bank of Switzerland, spending much of his time working between London and Johannesburg. He later joined the Johannesburg Bar and holds a BA in political science from the University of California and a Juris Doctorate in corporate law from Columbia University.

He was the former deputy chief executive officer of South African Airways, where he also served as general counsel and executive vice president for strategy, revenue management and network planning.

Among his prominent leadership titles currently held, he is chairman of the Vodacom board and executive chairman of Langa Group, a corporate investment company.

He chairs the Salamax consortium – the black empowerment partner which is a shareholder in Consol and part of the take-over bid led by private equity firm Brait. Salamax will own 26% of Consol.
