Court permits freezing of R43,000

The Asset Forfeiture Unit was on Tuesday, 12 January 2010, given permission to freeze R43,000 in the possession of two men believed to be connected to credit card fraud.

One of them is the son of prominent Port Elizabeth lawyer Silas Nkanunu, former president of Saru.

The Port Elizabeth High Court order stems from the arrest of Mongowesizwe Nkanunu, of New Brighton, and Siyabulela Cenga, of Walmer.

The two were arrested with Pinkey Samente, of Walmer; Thobelani Jayiya, of Kwazakhele, and Ndjoli Guylain, of Lorraine, in connection with alleged credit card fraud.

They were arrested at their homes in November.

They were allegedly found in possession of cloned cards from Musica, Standard Bank, Woolworths, Edgars, Mastercard, Absa Seattle, Capitec Bank, two skimming devices and a laptop.

The men are also being investigated for alleged credit card fraud amounting to R119,426 at Guido's Restaurant in Walmer.

Chris Ndzengu of the Asset Forfeiture Unit said that when customers used a lawfully issued credit card to pay for items they purchased, a member of the group purporting to be an employee of the business swiped the card through a hand-held skimming device and stored the account data.

This was later downloaded into a computer and encoded onto a lost or stolen bank card.

The men are due to appear in the North End Magistrate's Court on 9 February.
