    Apple Computer launches eMac

Apple Computer has introduced a mid-range computer designed for the education market. It is based on the iMac with a 700MHz G4 processor, but has a 17-inch flat CRT monitor and will be priced lower. Although aimed at the education market, it is also ideal for professional designers who would like a large viewing area.

This is Apple’s most affordable G4-based system. Many design changes make it ideal for the classroom situation:

    • It has an all-in-one design. All monitor and computer cords go into one unit and it has integrated speakers.
    • The body is rugged, made of fire-retardant polycarbonate plastic, the same material used to manufacture bulletproof glass.
    • Fingerprints easily wipe clean from the glass CRT display and from the body of the computer.
    • It fits easily on desks. It's body is slightly smaller than the iMac (8mm), although it has a built in 17-inch monitor.
    • It comes with a choice of two optical drives — either CD-ROM or a Combo drive (DVD-ROM and CD-RW).
    • Network and Internet connection is through a standard 10/100BASE-T Ethernet port.

The eMac comes with both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X, Apple’s most powerful yet easy-to-use operating system.
