Fighting hunger with 'Care 2 Carry'

Feedback Food Redistribution (Feedback) and Fruit & Veg City have joined forces to fight hunger in South Africa with the launch of the ‘Care 2 Carry' campaign, and customers are being asked to help. Shopping bags, designed by pupils from the Luzuko Primary School in Guguletu, are being sold at all Fruit & Veg City stores nationwide, and R2 will be donated to Feedback for each bag sold.

Fruit & Veg City has set itself the target of selling more than 100,000 bags during the campaign. Each bag will generate enough money for the organisation to provide two meals to those for whom hunger and malnourishment is a way of life.

“We applaud Fruit & Veg City's foresight in developing an innovative campaign that supports Feedback's approach to hunger relief nationally,” said Dean Hand, managing director of Feedback.

“We are very excited about the ‘Care 2 Carry' campaign and we aim to get all of our staff involved and motivated to help raise funds so that Feedback can continue to redistribute food to communities across the country,” said Shaneen Coppin Director of Fruit & Veg City.

The children were asked to draw pictures of their hopes and dreams, what they wanted to be when they grow up - and what makes them happy.

The colourful, re-useable bags are large enough to accommodate all of a customer's purchases and feature artwork by 10 children.

Feedback presented each child with a shopping bag displaying their artwork and a certificate of recognition for the artwork they created in a ceremony held at the school on 17 July 2008. The Book People donated 250 books to the school library, as well as one book to each child whose artwork was used.

“The Care 2 Carry Campaign is particularly heart warming because it showcases the aspirations of children who benefit directly from Feedback Food Redistributions Food Support programme,” said Hand.

Each year Feedback Food Redistribution provides enough food for 12 to 14 million meals to some of South Africa's most needy communities.

Feedback Food Redistribution collects good quality excess food - food that would otherwise have been wasted - from food outlets such as retailers, farmers, food manufacturers, catering companies and restaurants and redistributes it to social services organisations within the country.

Coppin concluded, “We hope that the ‘Care 2 Carry' campaign will inspire all South Africans to carry the hopes, dreams and aspirations of these children.”
