Adopted primary school celebrates Mandela Day

To celebrate Mandela Day, a group of L'Oreal South Africa employees spent the day at Lawley Primary School on 19 July 2010, inspecting recent upgrades sponsored by the company and donating desks, filing cabinets, outside tables and a much-needed overhead projector.

Classified as one of South Africa's poorest schools, Lawley Primary School is the only primary school servicing Lawley, an informal settlement to the southwest of Johannesburg with a population of 15 000 to 25 000. The settlement does not have running water and the electricity supply is unreliable. Approximately 90% of its residents are unemployed and the community is highly infected with HIV/AIDS.

The company adopted Lawley Primary School through the Adopt-a-School Foundation in 2009 and started constructing a building to house the grade R pupils. A new section was added to the existing structure, consisting of three classrooms and a toilet, while the existing structure was refurbished to include a kitchen, bathroom, sickbay and a storeroom.

Through 2010, it has continued with the upgrade of these facilities by adding cupboards to the kitchen, classrooms and storeroom, as well as skirtings and tiles to the classrooms and the installation of a stove in the kitchen. There are also plans to train ten educators in First Aid and donate a new First Aid kit to the school.

In addition, its staff donated blankets, clothing and toys, which were given to the school during their very own Soccer World Cup, which was held on 28 May, just in time for winter.
