Break bread on Table Mountain for peace

The annual Table of Peace & Unity held on Table Mountain will again see the public, dignitaries, celebrities and religious leaders getting together to enjoy a festive meal on 13 May - Mother's Day - for the pleasure of breaking bread with a wonderful diversity of strangers and raising funds for organisations working with abused, vulnerable and orphaned children across South Africa.

Top chefs Peter Tempelhoff and Delia Harbottle (of the Liz McGrath Collection); Morne Botha (Park Inn (by) Radisson); and Jerome Peters and Danielle Schamrel of the Cape Town Hotel School will create a three-course meal with ingredients supplied by Checkers.

Entertainment will be provided by Danny K, PJ Powers, the Gugulethu Tenors and Sterling EQ, among others. A special touch this year will be a Children's Table set up alongside the main table.

"It's fun for the children and reminds the rest of us that we are doing this for the benefit of the next generation", says founder and organiser, Christine Cashmore.

The Table of Peace & Unity was initiated by the Good Food & Wine Show 11 years ago and to date it has raised close to R12 million for children's charities.

"Every cent that we raise through ticket sales goes directly to the charities," emphasises Cashmore.

This year the event will be sponsored by Samsung Galaxy and MTN. Downings will again donate the enormous marquee that will host the lunch.

Beneficiaries:

  • Operation Bobbi Bear, Door of Hope Children's Mission and COPESSA in Johannesburg;
  • The Nceduluntu Sanctuary Trust, The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Youth Centre in Masiphumelele;
  • The Unathi Township Creche, "City Angel" Christine Booysten who works with homeless children in Lavender Hill, in Cape Town
  • Other "City Angels" - individuals or groups who dedicate their time and resources to working with abused or abandoned children - that will be identified nationally to receive financial assistance.

Join in spirit

All South Africans are urged to host their own Table - at home, on their street, in their community on 13 May.

"Even if people can't join us on Table Mountain on the day, they could create a Table of Peace & Unity wherever they live. Breaking bread together in a mindful way will go some way toward creating the peace and unity we all want for ourselves and our country."

Sponsors come to the party

Checkers will soon launch a national campaign encouraging the purchase of selected items. A percentage of the purchase price of these items will go toward the Table of Peace & Unity charities. The group will underwrite this donation to the value of R1 million.

MTN subscribers will have an opportunity to donate R5 to the charities by SMSing the word "Mother" to 36353 - a dedicated line.

Tickets for the Table of Peace & Unity can be bought through Computicket. For corporate concessions as well as tips on how to host your own Table, go to www.tableofpeaceandunity.co.za.
