Locally painted billboards, provide work, promote radio show

The Dinokeng Project, part of the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, is running a radio series on Moretele FM which deals with issues surrounding the opening of the Dinokeng Game Reserve (DGR) later this year. Local artists from the Steve Bikoville community are building their own billboards and adorning them with fun artwork in the communities bordering the DGR.

The Dinokeng Project provided all the materials for the art project and is paying the artists to construct, paint and then install the billboards in the area. A fee will be paid to the property owners where the boards will be located, providing additional income to these community members.

The billboards are currently under production and will take a week to build, paint and install in a number of key locations.

This art project is led by Jeanne Silver as an innovative way of empowering the local communities by using existing skills and talent. Local welder and artist Frank Modau, who will be constructing the billboards, will be working with Connie Ramoncha and Silver to paint them. In addition two learners, with a keen interest in art, Solly Baloyi and Jeanely Swanepoel, will be helping in the afternoons after school.
