UP students go global in strategy competition

Students from the University of Pretoria faired well in the recent GlobCom communication strategy competition. The competition was aimed at giving students from several countries the opportunity to work in international teams and to develop a communication strategy for an international client.

Universities from Germany, India, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Thailand and the USA participated in the second such competition. The entire class for BCom Honours (Communication Management) from the University of Pretoria represented South Africa.

Teams consisted of at least two participants from each country and communication between team members occurred mainly via email or chat rooms. The client for this year's competition was the Kingdom of Swaziland.

Lecturers from the different universities judged the strategies of six teams. An award ceremony was hosted by the University of Blanquerna, Barcelona. The two UP students who were part of the team with the winning strategy are Melissa Landman and Christina Parreira.

This prize-giving event also included seminar presentations. Two lecturers from the University of Pretoria participated in audio conferences about their recent research, namely, Gené van Heerden on, "The practice of public relations in Africa"; and Anné Leonard on, "Transformational change communication and the South African context of employment equity".
