Telkom offers staff voluntary retrenchment

Telkom is offering its employees voluntary severance packages or early retirement and any staff member has until August this year to decide whether to accept the offer.
Telkom offers staff voluntary retrenchment

This follows formal consultation with internal and external stakeholders‚ including the three recognised trade unions - the Communication Workers Union (CWU)‚ South African Communication Union (SACU) and Solidarity.

The packages were necessary as the majority of Telkom's employees who form part of the bargaining unit are represented by organised labour the telecommunications group said.

It said the move was aimed at enabling Telkom to achieve its business objectives‚ secure its sustainability and commercial viability by rebalancing its workforce in line with its strategic imperatives.

Thami Msubo‚ Telkom's chief of human resources‚ said: "The offer is necessary as there is an urgent need for the company to address its human capital requirements, which impact substantially and directly on the company's cost base. We try to improve efficiencies and re-align skill levels with the changes in our business and network to deliver what our customers want. The offer is the most efficient and non-invasive manner in which the company is able to begin effecting control on its headcount costs."

Msubo emphasised that any employee could apply for a package and that the company could accept or reject that application.

The criteria used to approve applications for voluntary severance or early retirement packages are based on the business and critical skills requirements at Telkom.

"After the retrenchment or retirement window period closes‚ Telkom may have to get rid of some staff to cut costs. Any retrenchment process will be done in accordance with the Labour Relations Act‚" Msubo added.
