Top 5 Idols thrown a curve ball

Idols Season V is almost down to the wire and during the week of 6 April 2009 the top five performers have to sing two songs each - but this time they the have been thrown a curve ball: for the first time this season the song choices are not entirely up to them.

The remaining Idols have all been paired with a radio station and these five radio stations have to choose a song for one of the five contestants, whom they will support on air throughout the week. The songs chosen by the radio stations were announced in the 7 April edition of Go Exxtra, the Idols TV fan show, presented by Elana Afrika.

Jacaranda FM will be backing Thembi Nkosi with the Brenda Fassie hit “Weekend Special”; KZN's Eastcoast Radio selected the legendary Mike & the Mechanics song “The Living Years” for home boy Jason Hartman; OFM will get Lendel into the groove with Maroon 5's “Sunday morning”; KFM prescribed “The Man who can't be Moved” by The Script for Graeme Watkins; and Algoa FM is on Sasha Lee's side with “Bleeding Love”, by Leona Lewis.

The second song remains the Idols' own choice, but this time round they have to perform a song made famous by their very own music Idol.

Thembi will showcase her musical abilities with “No One”, a hit song by a lady she's always looked up to, Alicia Keys; Jason settled on “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by his Idol, Stevie Wonder; Sasha Lee will give a feminine touch to “Un Angelo”, originally performed by Robbie Williams (“Angels”), her ultimate pop icon; Lendel will pay homage to Craig David with “7 days”; and Graeme Watkins will do what's never been done on Idols before. As he only has great respect for local star Kurt Darren, he has decided to sing “Loslappie.” Even though the song is based on a folk tune and has been translated into English recently, Graeme will be doing the Afrikaans version, making him the first South African Idol to go with Afrikaans lyrics.

Listen to Kenzy Vinco weekdays from 7pm on OFM for all the Idols action as it happens and pop online to www.ofm.co.za and vote for your favourite Idol.
