Job description

Key purpose of role

The Sub-Editor is responsible for subbing copy of the highest quality with attention to detail and fact. The Sub-Editor must have a solid understanding of the press code and experience in managing any potential corrections in line with EWN Digital’s Standard Operating Procedure.

Key performance areas

Implementation:

• Proofreading and editing: checking copy for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation and style.
• Verify facts and figures, ensuring the story is factual and unbiased.
• Maintain consistency with EWN's style guide (tone, punctuation, etc.).
• Writing engaging and concise headlines and captions to capture attention.
• Article layout and design
• Editing, and publishing articles and other content.
• Collaborating with reporters and editors to refine stories and meet deadlines.
• Understanding media law: Be aware of press code and media law to ensure the content is legally compliant.

Quality control:

• Ensure high editorial standards across EWN platforms.
• Provide feedback and support to improve writing, headlines, and narrative flow.
• Maintain control over content assignments to ensure alignment with editorial priorities.

Team management:

• Work closely with the editorial team and news desk to ensure deadlines are prioritised.
• Foster a culture of creativity, writing excellence, and editorial innovation.
• Support new content formats and editorial experimentation.
• Facilitate collaboration and open communication.
• Mentor and guide writers to develop their skills and editorial confidence.



Minimum required qualification:

• Qualification in journalism, English, communications or media studies.
• Experience working with CMS platforms.

Qualifications considered advantageous:

• Experience with image editing tools (e.g., Canva, Photoshop).
• Familiarity with analytics tools such as Google Analytics or Chartbeat

Minimum years of experience:

• At least 3-6 years’ experience in broadcast media with writing and/or sub-editing experience.
