Creative Circle results for December 2007

The Creative Circle results for December 2007 are out, and according to chairperson Julian Watt, “there was a healthy amount of work across all the media types and within that bulk quite a few really strong pieces to contend for the ad of the year prize. And hopefully put some international points on the South African board.”

Watt also “accuses” Net#work of “award show fixing”…

Newspaper (in no particular order):

  • Ad of Year Finalist: Sweets from Heaven/Hubba Bubba “Poodle” – Ireland-Davenport
  • Ad of Year Finalist: Independent Newspapers/Cape Argus “Aids Stats” – KingJames (CT)
  • Ad of Year Finalist: SABC/Metro FM “Toilet/Train/Park” – Net#Work BBDO

“Had a great ad that used the medium and a tactical opp. brilliantly. It was really good to see an ad that wouldn't really work well anywhere else. In fact, it was good also that the outdoor wasn't just print ads blown up. We're getting quite awesome at this, “ comments Watt.

Magazine (in no particular order):

  • Ad of Year Finalist: Honda SA “Friendly Technology” – DDB SA
  • Ad of Year Finalist: Apple IMC/Ipod Shuffle “The Classic Album Shuffle” – Net#Work BBDO
  • Ad of Year Finalist: Toys R Us/Classic Movie DVDs “Karate Kid/Titanic/ Lion King” – Volcano

Says Watt, “Presented some deserving winners, but we were a bit perplexed by the scale of these poster pull-sized magazine ads. We excused it to agencies not having the budget to craft more than one sized pull, but agreed to talk a bit more about the actual rule at the next CDF meeting.”

Outdoor (in no particular order):

  • Ad of Year Finalist: Society for Animals in Distress “Collection Box” – Grey Adv
  • Ad of Year Finalist: Virgin Atlantic/Upper Class Suites “Mr Grumble/Mr Messy/ Mr Grumpy/Mr Lazy/Mr Nosy/Mr Tall/Mr Funny – Net#Work BBD0
  • Ad of Year Finalist: VWV/TDI “Big Snacks” – Ogilvy

“The winners showed a good mix of all types of outdoor, ranging from conventional 96 sheeter hoardings, to a brilliant use of in-store activation (which unfortunately can only be entered in outdoor), to a bloody powerful interactive ambient piece for public service,” comments Watt.

TV/cinema (in no particular order):

  • Ad of Year Finalist: McCain/Real Ovenbake Chips “The Long one with Goodness” – Net#Work BBDO
  • Ad of Year Finalist: SABC/5fm “Kiss/DJ/Walk the Dog” – Net#Work BBDO
  • Ad of Year Finalist: SA Post Office/Parcels “Father Christmas” – Saatchi & Saatchi

“Had some high-craft work getting through as well as some typically local textured stuff,” he states.

Radio (in no particular order):

  • Ad of Year Finalist: BMW SA/ “Gong Gong” – Ireland-Davenport
  • Ad of Year Finalist: Virgin Atlantic/Upper Class “Mr Grumble/Mr Grumpy/Mr Miserable/Mr Nonsense/Mr Worry – Net#Work BBDO
  • Ad of Year Finalist: Wordswoth Bookstore “Moses” – Saatchi & Saatchi

“Had some deserving winners but not much outside of the three that made it through. It remains the woods where not many venture and anything could happen. C'mon. Good things happen in the dark. A mindset we should all quickly adopt given a certain Eskom reality.

“We ended with a great gesture from [administrator] Arlene [Donenburg] to donate all the entry money from this month to the Public service piece for The Society for Animals in Distress that won the Outdoor. The contribution made by the month's entries will make a substantial difference to their cause. Take a bow all entrants. I look forward to seeing how this work fares against the other 11 months' winners. Rock on and use more heart and less power,” concludes Watt.
