There is no mystery in understanding the audience

For the first time in South Africa, creative and marketing people have the opportunity to attend a skills-based training course to hep them learn to master the art of aligning products and services to audience and customer needs.

Howard Thomas's internationally acclaimed "Understanding Audiences" course has now been extended to include a range of courses that address needs of all creative industries.

The range of courses are relevant to people in the Film, Television, Radio, Advertising, Theatre and Live Events, Sponsorship, Music, Print Media, Heritage, Design, Craft and Corporate Social Investment sectors.

These courses demystify the psychology of audiences and give a unique insight into the skills of how to use demographics, psychographics, semiotics and geodemographics.

"Suddenly all these forbidding words make sense, and audiences become real people that you know and love," says Howard Thomas.

Initially designed for writing treatments in the film industry, the courses recognise that all audiences and all creative industries are basically the same and therefore use the same skills and techniques.

The scope of the courses covers three levels;

  • A one-day course which gives all people in media and entertainment a unique insight into audiences.
  • A four-day course which qualifies people to write treatments and content proposals.
  • A six-day course which qualifies people to go beyond writing treatments and proposals, and move forward to writing marketing plans, business plans and prospectuses for funders and financiers.

All courses are outcomes-based and strictly comply with the requirements of the National Skills Framework. They all conform to enterprise standards. The longer courses include full skills assessment and are certificated.

Howard Thomas has nearly forty years experience in the field of the nature and behaviour of audiences. His pioneering work and various books written over the past ten years have achieved international acclaim. The course has been run in different entertainment schools over the past three years.
