Online magazine adds print editions

From 1 December 2010, the online photography magazine, PhotoComment, extends its reach by producing free print editions available from several photographic retailers and colleges around the country. The publication, described as the first online flip page photography magazine of its kind in South Africa, launched in March 2009.

"The decision to move to print was not one we rushed into. One consideration for moving to print was to broaden the reach and awareness of the magazine locally in South Africa. With a sharp increase of international readers on the online format there certainly seems to be interest for a South African photography publication abroad, but we did not want to leave local readers in the cold," said the magazine's founder, Tristan Hall.

"A second consideration is that while media will continue to move online and into digital formats, photography is a medium that has a greater life when in print. In my mind, print is the soul of a photograph."

International interest

This year has seen an increased awareness of the magazine both in South Africa as well as abroad. Hall has featured twice on the American podcast 'This Week In Photo' and following live reports from Photokina 2010 in Cologne Germany, it began to receive links from several international websites as well.

"It is our firm belief that a portion of the international awareness we receive is due to our South African base, even with international contributors writing regularly for PhotoComment. The availability of our magazine in print is a means to increase our local awareness and encourage local photographers' contributions, which will again be showcased to the world through the same online edition."
