Lillian Dube beats cancer

The festive season couldn't have been merry for actress Lillian Dube after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2007 during a routine check-up, but now Soul City's Sister Bettina can look forward to a happy New Year, following a successful surgical procedure in which the cancerous growth was removed from her breast on 11 January 2008.

Dube's surgery included the removal of the tumour and breast reconstruction; she will now be undergoing chemotherapy treatment once every three weeks for the next coming six months as a safety measure to ensure that potentially remaining microscopic cancer cells are totally destroyed.

A prayer meeting was held at the SABC on 8 January for the 62-year old, who has expressed her thanks to those who had been supportive of her and kept her in their prayers.

In a press release from the Soul City Institute, which promotes health, development and social change, the institute applauded Dube for going public with her cancer diagnosis.

“We wish her a speedy recovery and pledge our support as she recuperates. By being open about her condition, Lillian has created further awareness of breast cancer and encouraged women to take charge of their lives and have regular checkups,” says Lebo Ramafoka, Soul City senior executive for media.

‘We would like to urge all women to contact the Cancer Association of South Africa on 0800 22 66 22 for more information on the different cancers that can affect them.”
