Name Your Hood in Cape Town

Two entrepreneurs, Bruce Good and Nic Lamond, have come up with a competition to encourage local Cape Town residents to rename their favourite areas with creative and functional names, just as New York has Tribeca and there is a Soho found in each of the trendiest cities of the world.

The initiative has gained interest with a number of sponsors ready to participate, which include Groupon, Cape Town Tourism, Cape Town Partnership, Accelerate Cape Town and Wesgro, Pam Golding Properties, Mr Delivery and Vida e Caffe.

When asked about the sponsorship, Daniel Guasco, joint CEO of Groupon said that, "We immediately saw a synergy between this project and the company, as it is all about giving locals a way to explore their cities for less. Name Your Hood will give locals a means to navigate that exploration".

Two Cape Town neighbourhoods will be named per month and people are invited to submit their ideas for names over a 20-day period on www.nameyourhood.co.za or via voting pamphlets which will be distributed. A panel will then shortlist 10 names and the public will be invited to vote via sms or on the website. The name that accumulates the most votes will be selected.

The naming of the first two neighbourhoods will be today, Monday 4 July 2011 and entries can be submitted until 20 July. The shortlist will be made public on 25 July, voting closes on 4 August and the new names will be unveiled at an event on 6 August. All neighbourhoods on the Cape Town map will be named by 10 December. The idea comes to Durban and Johannesburg in 2012.
