Maverick - a fun business magazine

Launching in November is Maverick, a brand new four weekly (not monthly) glossy magazine for business people who don't see the upside of being bored. Hailing from the newly established Business Century stable, Maverick, will be launched nationally on 3 November with a circulation of 30 000 copies, 14 000 of which will be mailed with Fortune Magazine to its South African subscribers.

The brainchild of media entrepreneur, Branko Brkic - of Brainstorm fame - Maverick is something of a quest. After wooing the necessary financial partners and passionately convincing the cream of South African business writers and doyens to join him, Brkic has managed to deliver what he believes to be, "the first business magazine that people will actually read in South Africa".

"People, not money, make the business world go round. At Maverick we have a duty to introduce these people to our readers, be they mining magnates or young black empowerment players, with a sense of purpose and access.

"The world of business is filled with intrigue, bloodletting, backstabbing and more fascinating stories that you can shake a stick at. These are the stories that Maverick is dedicated to telling," says Phillip De Wet, Deputy Editor of the magazine.

Maverick focuses on the South African business space and follows the exploits of local companies in Africa and beyond: "Of course we wouldn't be a real business magazine if we ignored the rest of the world so every month you'll find columns from our embedded correspondents in China, the USA and elsewhere."

Brkic says his mission is simply to make readers into better business people: "This is our passion and the fundamental philosophy on which the entire magazine is based. Because, there is nothing wrong with enjoying your business read."
