The year that was - Wideopen

It has been an incredible year for companies in the outdoor and alternate media industries, says Primedia Unlimited subsidiary Wideopen Platform. Growth has been substantial, more notably in the entrance of new product categories into the large format outdoor space such as fuel companies, FMCG and fashion brands.

"It has also been noted that the market is beginning to open, demonstrated in the number of new media owner entrants to our space, [reiterating] the value of the medium," says Wideopen CEO Caryn Cohen.

A highlight this year for Wideopen was the flighting of the largest building wrap in the southern hemisphere, spanning over 7000m2, in downtown Johannesburg, as part of Nedbank's new brand relaunch. "The inner city is making a notable comeback. The fresh interest in the city centre is creating new hope for the CBD - not to mention the outdoor media opportunities that accompany it!"

Indicative of the demand in the industry for innovation, the company introduced Nightlife Projections - which sees the strategic placement of static projections in locations frequented by high amounts of nightlife traffic - and Hoardings, the placement of 5m high advertisements around construction sites.

"This serves to detract from the eyesore of construction while simultaneously allowing high profile brands the opportunity to hold uninterrupted conversations with their target markets."
