Team SA win five medals at IKA Culinary Olympics

The City of Cape Town has congratulated Team South Africa on winning five medals at the Internationale Kochkunst Ausstellung (IKA) Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany.

These include a gold medal in the hot kitchen (warm foods) category, three silver medals and one bronze in the cold kitchen (cold dishes) category.

Executive Chef of Vergelegen Wine Estate situated in Helderberg, Henrico Grobbelaar, also individually won a silver medal for his contribution.

Congratulating the top chefs for their outstanding successes, Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille said: “They have helped to boost South Africa's international reputation as a fine food destination.”

The competition, which took place from 18-22 October, brings together the world's best chefs to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in various categories.

This year, over 35 countries took part. Like the Olympics and Paralympics, the Culinary Olympics takes place every four years, and is considered the most important event in its field.

Team South Africa comprises 11 chefs and two logistics officials, and is managed by Garth Shnier (who is also international competition director of the SA Chefs Association and Executive Chef at Sandton Sun Hotel in Johannesburg).

Although partly sponsored, none of the team members get paid for their involvement, and have to cover their costs with ticket sales and personal funds.
